Position Role Type:

Hybrid

About This Position:

Do you have a passion for innovation focused on exciting physics that develop under confinement and have application across a broad spectrum of aerospace and defense applications? If so, the Thermofluid Sciences Discipline needs your skills. Our Senior Research Engineer position demands strong engineering and physics expertise in analysis of physical systems, particularly interfacial phenomena, and the ability to create a modeling framework and/or develop out-of-the-box solutions. These models are already being used to understand a wide diversity of phenomena such as ice formation, high voltage arcing behavior, soot creation and contrail formation; we need help expanding this body of work for our next-generation products. To accomplish this we will value your ability to expand your thinking across traditional boundaries and particularly to be innovative in the traditional discipline of heat transfer.

We deeply value multidisciplinary skills and/or willingness to stretch your knowledge into the following areas: thermofluids, physics, chemistry, and material science. This could include experimental as well as modeling (including computational and analytical modeling) skillsets.  In return, you will be rewarded with a front-row-seat to technology challenges of the most exciting products within aviation and defense.

Basic Qualifications:

U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person status (Green Card) required

Colloidal science and/or interfacial science background

Ability to develop reduced order models (i.e., scaling laws, 0-D, 1-D or linearized models of non-linear systems), particularly pertinent to interfacial systems. This could include thermodynamic models that are used to describe the overall behavior of different systems such as a material system

Some knowledge of programming languages in the context of physics-based modeling

Some understanding of experimental settings, particularly benchtop/canonical settings, pertinent to interfacial systems, such as coatings, and/or phase-change systems

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Physics, Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering required. We will consider Ph.D. candidates with no formal experience, and work in cross-disciplinary engineering is a plus. M.S. candidates must have 3+ years of experience in a relevant work environment.

Track record of exploiting paradoxical concepts to develop technologies that may be considered unordinary but are crucial to disrupt traditional disciplines such as heat transfer.

Track record of critical/independent thinking and ability to create synergies across otherwise orthogonal disciplines

General understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling

Ability to manage uncertain requirements, formulate a problem from ill-defined needs, develop approaches to solve problems, and recognize when additional subject matter expertise is needed

Ability to be agile and work on multiple projects with multiple customers

Strong publication and presentation record

Adaptability and the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment

Excellent communication skills, informal and formal presentation skills, and ability to foster positive relationships with internal and external partners
