Job Description

Overview: Senior Principal Engineer, Air Systems – HT – Durability Aero, Aerothermal Fluids

The Aero Thermal Fluids (ATF) organization is responsible for the functional aerodynamic design, analysis and performance of components and modules throughout Pratt & Whitney commercial and military engine product lines. 

We are seeking multiple secondary flow, heat transfer, and durability leaders to join our Air Systems, Durability, Combustor, and Augmentor aerodynamics teams.  This work is at the forefront of advancing state of the art in aerospace technology through efficient thermal systems using world class tools, design methods, and test vehicles. 

An Air Systems / Heat Transfer / Durability Aerodynamicist Senior Principal Engineer is technical-leadership position of experienced individuals that routinely interface with company leadership to identify and solve key issues to the company.  A Senior Principal engineer has domain expertise across a broad range of combustion applications, including both technology exploration and product designs.  Experience and advanced skills are expected in flow circuit modeling, cooling system designs, liner cooling and heat transfer / durability analyses, and expert technical proficiency using/developing high fidelity modeling (Computational Fluid Dynamics) of internal air system flow circuits, as well as rotating and static structure thermal analyses.  A Senior Principal Engineer will be responsible for developing strategy, resource management, leading high performance teams, and regular communication with senior management to meeting project goals.  Growth pathways include supervisory responsibility, leadership of larger teams.

Responsibilities include:

Technical team lead responsible for planning and execution of secondary flow and heat transfer design and analysis tasks, including concept studies, product design, rig & engine tests, technology development, and root cause investigations.

Technical execution of all aspects of high-fidelity modeling workflow:  cooling flow circuits, model development, grid generation, analysis execution, post-processing results, and analysis / interpretation of results as part of technology and product development programs.

Create models, perform aero thermal fluids analyses, and integrate solutions with internal systems organizations and external airframe partners.

Coordinate analyses and communicate results as part of a cross-disciplinary team, including internal customers and external customers (airframers, govt reps).

Be responsible for timely and quality delivery of aerothermal analyses and contract deliverables.

Process analytical and rig/engine test data to inform design decisions and root cause analyses.

Support rig and/or engine testing, analyze results in support of analytical model validation and product design verification.

Lead resolution of significant program issues, identify risks, develop mitigation plans and design solutions.

Contribute to discipline process / tool development and continuous improvement strategic plans / tasks.

Mentor engineers and contribute to sustained discipline health.

Basic Qualifications:

An undergraduate degree in an engineering / STEM related field

10+ years of prior relevant engineering experience, or 7+ years of engineering experience with an advanced engineering degree.

US Citizenship required due to government contracts. 

Ability to obtain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

An active US Govt security clearance.

Demonstrated technical excellence in combustion physics, aerodynamic/fluid mechanics analysis and their associated analysis tools (CFD, FEA, CAD, Matlab, etc).

Experience leading aerothermal fluids teams and projects.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

Willingness to work in cross-disciplinary teams.
