Department Overview:

The Materials & Processes Engineering (MPE) Department is responsible for developing advanced materials and manufacturing technologies to enable system-level enhancements for both Military and Commercial jet engines. Materials Characterization is a critical discipline within MPE.  We are responsible for new characterization methods development, data generation for known and unknown material system, and complex data interpretation and analysis. We need an Engineer to lead our light spectroscopy methods sub-specialty. The individual will focus on Raman, Infrared, Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) light spectroscopy methods development to guide Engineering decision-making within P&W.

The Engineer will work within inter-disciplinary teams, including new Materials Development, Failure Analysis, Design/Structures, Quality, and Manufacturing, to define the appropriate characterization tools required for new materials technology development programs, determination of root cause for Engine Safety Investigations, and provide critical engineering data for Manufacturing/Quality issue resolution. This role will be responsible for maintaining and applying current capabilities and further advancing measurement technologies by developing novel approach to analyze known and unknown material systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Collaborate directly with Engineering customers to define work scope and data requirements for molecular structure, chemistry, and phase identification within jet engine hardware
Utilize advanced spectroscopy techniques to generate customer data required to define a materials’ constitution and improve the fundamental understanding of how changes in material systems (through deliberate manipulation or through unintended engine operation) impact part performance
Create and implement strategies, procedures, and workflows to promote efficiency and improved data quality, including in the areas of automation and batch processing
Identify and develop external partnerships with national laboratories, government partners, and universities, to  expand current P&W capabilities with complementary technologies
Support in-house instrument capitalization programs, including business case development, to enhance internal characterization capabilities
Train engineers and technicians on advanced characterization techniques
Work in a fast-paced environment where multiple concurrent projects is typical

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Engineering
8+ years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree in relevant field with heavy emphasis in materials characterization techniques (Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, etc.) and 5+ years of relevant experience
Noteworthy hands-on experience in at least one of the following techniques Raman Spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy, or UV-Vis Spectroscopy
US Citizenship required due to government contracts

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in relevant field with heavy emphasis in materials characterization techniques (Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science)
Raman and Infrared Spectroscopy data analysis and processing skills
Fundamental knowledge of light interaction with materials to produce absorption, scattering, fluorescence, and interpretation of output
Coding experience for image analysis and data quantification (Matlab, Python, MathWorks, OriginPro or similar tools)
Leadership in development and implementation of advanced characterization techniques
Experience working in large collaborative teams to solve technically difficult problems
Proficient at presenting technical data to both technical and non-technical audiences
Strong oral and written communication skills

What is my role type?

In addition to transforming the future of flight, we are also transforming how and where we work. We’ve introduced role types to help you understand how you will operate in our blended work environment. This role is:

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance workers, as they are essential to the development of our engines.

Candidates will learn more about role type and current site status throughout the recruiting process. For onsite and hybrid roles, commuting to and from the assigned site is the employee’s personal responsibility.
