Aeronautics Systems sector is seeking an Automation Senior Principal Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals.  This position will be located at Palmdale, CA Center of Excellence where technology and teamwork come together.  The qualified applicant will become part of Northrop Grumman’s Automation Manufacturing Engineering Team working in a collaborative environment while promoting a positive and proactive teamwork environment.

As a member of the Advanced Automation team, you will define, develop, implement, and transition new technology solutions to manufacturing to increase efficiency, reduce cost, and improve quality.  Manufacturing concept and process solutions for production applications cover advanced technologies including but not limited to composites fabrication, assembly, automation, inspection, direct part manufacturing, LO technologies, as well as digital capabilities. 

Senior Principal Engineering job duties involve the following: Applies extensive technical expertise and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Guides the successful completion of major programs and may function in a project leadership role. Senior Principal Engineers for Aeronautics Systems are expected to develop technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) with 9 years of experience OR Master’s Degree in STEM with 7 years of experience OR PhD STEM with 4 years of experience in production assembly/fabrication including composites, metallic, coatings application, and/or production manufacturing operations; OR
Bachelor’s Degree (non-STEM) with 11 years of experience OR Master’s Degree (non-STEM) with 9 years of experience in OR PhD (non-STEM) with 7 years of experience in production assembly/fabrication including composites, metallic, coatings application, and/or production manufacturing operations; OR
Associates Degree or High School Diploma/GED with 17 years of work Experience in production assembly/fabrication including composites, metallic, coatings application, and/or production manufacturing operations.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret or Top-Secret Clearance as well as Program Special access within a reasonable period, as determined by the company to meet its business need.
Experience designing in 3D CAD. CATIA, NX, CREO etc. and a firm understanding of GD&T and tolerance stack-up
Experience managing projects (Cost, schedule, and technical performance). 
Understanding of Coordination of design and fabrication requirements for tools and fixtures with customers, both internal and external.
Experience providing innovative techniques focused on improving product designs and tooling assemblies or equipment
Experience supporting manufacturing / production operations with an understanding of manufacturing processes and procedures
Experience in machining, robotics, or numerical control programming
Experience in composites, automation, heating systems or coatings application
Experience working or knowledge of Process Work Instructions (PWI)
Experience in creating work instructions, training materials & visual aids
Experience reviewing and interpreting Blueprints and 3-D models
Experience in system requirements development, acceptance testing and training
Experience working hands-on in a production assembly line environment
Experience in troubleshooting systems, and root cause and corrective action analysis
Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook
Ability to interface / communicate with multiple levels of leadership, engineering, production, customers, and suppliers
Ability to work 1st shift, or 2nd shift and any work schedule (times may vary)

Preferred Qualifications  

STEM Degree (Science, Technical, Engineering or Mathematical)
Experience working hands-on in a production assembly line environment
Secret or Top-Secret clearance preferred
Experience in the development, capture, and execution of R&D technology capabilities.  Assessing maturity of new technology for transition to production
Experience with authoring proposals, technical documents, and procedures
Experience with CBA/ROI analysis and justification
Project / Program Management skills (proposal creation, scheduling, budget tracking)
Experience in Transition to Production activities
