Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Sr. Principal Quality Engineer to join our Final Assembly Factory Quality Engineering Team at our BWI campus. This specific position will serve as the Lead Test Quality Engineer for Final Assembly.

Primary Responsibilities

Applies extensive technical knowledge in industry standard quality engineering methods, interpretation of drawing requirements and applicable specifications & standards, and mechanical measurement & analysis
Proactively establishes and maintains high technical competency in products, manufacturing and business processes, and related technologies
Confidently facilitates efforts to resolve complex quality problems using sound problem-solving methodology – including through application of established root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action methods
Leads efforts to identify and reduce safety, quality, and business risks through application of formal and informal methods
Leads efforts to reduce waste and improve processes through application of established continual improvement methods
Engages directly in shop floor activities across Final Assembly manufacturing cells – including through monitoring of manufacturing processes, leading quality assessments and audits, and controlling and review of non-conforming material
Facilitates Preventive & Corrective Action Board (PCAB) process – including leading and participating in data gathering, analysis, and presentation activities
Promotes and implements World Class Manufacturing (WCM) framework
Serves as a “strong voice for quality” and a role model for NG Values
Trains, mentors, and develops junior-level personnel, and participates in the design and implementation of training materials
Serves as a Factory Quality Engineering liaison for adjacent Quality functions – including Supplier Performance Management, Compliance, Program Quality, and Inspection

Discretion/Latitude: Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective, for desired results.
Impact: Guides the successful completion of major programs and may function in a project leadership role. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve major organizational objectives.
Liaison: Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related STEM field
Minimum of nine (9) years of relevant work experience; or seven (7) years with Master’s Degree; or four (4) years with PhD
Ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET clearance. US Citizenship Required.
Strong interpersonal skills – including ability to establish and maintain positive working relationship with stakeholders and customers at all levels, ranging from conversations on the shop floor through briefing senior management
Manufacturing or Quality Assurance Experience
Understanding of Root Cause Corrective Action process
Experience working with electrical or mechanical design requirements and specifications.
Experience with SAP or other similar logistical software
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications

Preferred Qualifications

J-STD-001, IPC-A-610, and IPC/WHMA-A-620 certifications
Experience with World Class Manufacturing (WCM)
Experience with Quality Management Systems (e.g. AS9100, ISO 9001, etc…)
Experience working with DCMA or other defense or government customers
Strong background in electronic and RF testing requirements and troubleshooting failures
Defense industry experience, including interface with government customers
Experience conducting, leading and supporting audits
Experience working or leading Root Cause and Corrective Action activities
Active DoD Secret Clearance


Salary Range: $112,300 USD – $168,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
