Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division (SSSD) has an opening for a Principle Mechanical Engineer within the Mechanical Ground Systems Engineering team. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, CA at Space Park.
Mechanical Ground Systems Engineers support the design, fabrication, and use of Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE). MGSE is non-flight hardware used to support the integration, test, and launch of spacecraft and its various stages of assembly. This includes, but is not limited to, lift slings, transportation systems, robotics, zero-g deployment fixtures, pneumatics, propellant loading systems, etc.
Mechanical Ground Support Equipment Designers are responsible for the following:
Design and Modeling in 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software
Fundamental structural analysis techniques
Drafting using CAD software
Fabrication support at vendors including acceptance testing and inspection
End-user support during integration operations
Integration & Test process flow development
As a Principle Mechanical Engineer, a qualified candidate is expected to be proficient in design and analysis principles, processes, and tools.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
Bachelors of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution plus 5 years of engineering experience OR Masters of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution plus 2 years of engineering experience.
Experience with design modeling and drawing efforts using 3-D CAD modeling tools such as CATIA
Candidate must have or be able to obtain/maintain, at least ONE of the following active U.S. Government security clearances: Department of Defense Top Secret level with a background investigation date within 6 years OR SCI Access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within 5 years OR Department of Energy Q clearance with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within 5 years.
Masters’ Degree in Mechanical Engineering
Previous experience in MGSE design, fabrication, and proof load testing
Demonstrated ability / desire to lead design efforts of less experienced engineers
Experience in structural analysis using hand-calculations and Finite Element Methods
Salary Range: $95,000 USD – $142,400 USD
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
