Northrop Grumman is currently seeking a Director of Design Engineering for our Armament Systems Business Unit located in Plymouth, MN.

With annual revenues in of nearly 800 million, 1000 plus employees, and operations in 3 states, Armament Systems is growing and has many opportunities. Armament system is world leading supplier of many defense products such medium caliber ammunition and guns, large caliber ammunition, the projectile guidance kit for artillery ammunition barriers defense solutions, and much more.

Position Overview

The Director of Design Engineering provides leadership to the design engineering department, which is responsible for the design and development activities of Armament Systems business unit products. The domains within this department include:

Mechanical design and structural and thermal analysis
Electrical, sensor, and power design
Software development 
Computer-aided mechanical and electrical (MCAD and ECAD) designers

The person in this role is accountable for the technical design excellence of our products, staff planning, and the overhead costs of the department. The Director of Design Engineering is responsible for driving product development through efficient processes, domain technical expertise, timely decision making, personnel development, knowledge transfer to sustain needed expertise, effective resource management and embracing a continuous improvement philosophy.

Responsibilities for the Director of Design Engineering

Assess and improve processes, tools, documentation and management techniques to maximize design engineering execution excellence and quality in partnership with other facets of the Engineering and Operations organization
Support and motivate a high performing engineering team in the areas of Mechanical, Electrical, and Software design as well as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems and processes
Provide overall leadership and technical direction to a broad-based engineering organization in all Armament Systems product lines
Ensure hiring plans and staff development needs are aligned with supported program need and achieve performance goals
Support technology growth in innovation identification, technical roadmap development, and proposal preparation
Promote and set high standards for quality and safety
Manage department budgets and other resources to effectively meet business goals
Maintain knowledge of engineering best practices and specific engineering skills
Serve as a role model supporting Armament System’s mission and values.
Representation and communication of Armament Systems technical capabilities and technologies to external customers and suppliers and other Northrop Grumman organizations.
Support Armament Systems initiatives and lead continuous improvement activities within the overall engineering department.
Review, and approve cost estimates and written technical proposals.
Maintains Armament System’s engineering process and drives technical excellence by ensuring department output meets technical standards.

Requirements for the Director of Design Engineering

Minimum of 15 years of experience in successful design and development of electromechanical systems in hardware and/or software
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited University in a relevant engineering field; MSE or MBA preferred
Minimum of 5 years of experience in leading and developing staff, including performance and compensation management, proven mentoring and coaching skills, managing conflict and administering performance improvement plans as needed
Strong background in process and knowledge of AS9100/ISO 9001, Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level III, and Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP)
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, Project)
U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain a DOD security clearance to a level of secret
Experience in product development projects and sustainment of legacy programs for complex aerospace or defense systems
Strong understanding of how product designs must comply with performance requirements with margins, meet cost goals and be producible in volume
Familiarity with systems engineering processes and other specialty engineering activities within the product development process
Working knowledge of computer aided design (CAD) software and familiarity with engineering requirements and analysis tools (FEA),
Experience writing statements of work and estimating project scope
Demonstrated effectiveness in achieving results through understanding and management of internal customer relationships, prioritization, and delegation of tasks.
Experience with the operations of upstream process inputs (Lead System Integrators, Business Development, Contracts, Pricing, Program Management, Project Engineering, and Systems Engineering)
Experience with the operations of downstream process customers (both internal and external: Modeling & Simulation, Configuration Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Operations, Assembly, Test, System Verification & Validation, Integrated Logistics Support, and End User)
Experience with coaching, developing talent, and maintaining the accountability of direct reports.
Demonstrated experience with presenting complex technical concepts to audiences with a broad range of technical experience.
Demonstrated experience in project management
Position may require domestic and international travel

Salary Range: $177,400 USD – $266,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
