Astronauts, flight controllers, instructors, simulators, and facilities must all be certified for readiness, and a team of training management specialists leads the charge. This CTO team is responsible for leading multi-discipline teams in the planning, prioritizing, conducting, and assessing of astronaut, flight controller, and instructor training for human spaceflight. The successful candidate for this CTO team position demonstrates foundations of professional excellence through discipline, competence, confidence, responsibility, toughness, teamwork, and vigilance.

Located at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, KBR is seeking experienced candidates who have served our country through the various branches of the US Military.
CTOs design and integrate efficient training plans for all flight phases. They are responsible for individual and team performance and integrating and communicating plans for a wide variety of training formats. CTOs develop and use best practices to enhance efficiency for low earth orbit programs including the International Space Station (ISS), Commercial Crew, Commercial Resupply, and Human Exploration and Operations programs such as Artemis, Gateway, and Human Lander Systems. KBR CTOs also work with Private Astronaut providers on training and space flight preparedness. Example responsibilities include:
Defining training requirements and assessing training capabilities
Establishing or adapting training objectives and material
Ensuring the effectiveness of workarounds or solutions to resource challenges
Tracking training-related risks
This role requires a high degree of awareness of training objectives and the means of achieving them, as well as the ability to integrate specialized input from NASA and International Partner team members in the development of a team plan.
CTOs routinely integrate training content at the Program level, which involves close coordination between FOD and its supported Programs, International Partners, Commercial Vehicle providers, and external customers. These interfaces require the integration of diverse cultural considerations and opinions to reach an achievable path forward. A CTO will accomplish this via participation in FOD and related Program boards and panels, where they regularly present integrated training concepts, requirements, statuses, and flight readiness. This can involve conducting multi-party telecons and presenting at boards, panels, and working groups at NASA Centers, Commercial Company sites across the US, and International Partner across the globe. Completion of the CTO certification process and formal CTO certification are required.
In addition to these primary roles, CTOs support other assignments to best utilize their unique skills, experience, and interests. These include but are not limited to:
Serving as chair of FOD working groups and panels intended to integrate training requirements across FOD organizations, International Partners, and external providers.
Developing and testing simulator loads to ensure adequate training capability for crews and flight control teams.
Identifying and developing innovative training methods, techniques, and initiatives in response to training gaps and mission design changes
Monitoring of training and certification metrics
Benchmarking training processes throughout industry
Education/Experience Required: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, science, mathematics, or other technically related area and 5+ years of related experience.
Broad background in operations and training
Subject matter expertise in training and certification processes
Technical knowledge of mission systems, flight software, and crew/ground procedures
Experience in technical leadership related to the instructor and/or the flight controller task.
Proven ability to mentor within close-knit teams.
Proven ability to form and lead diverse technical teams.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to effectively communicate and understand complex technical and training issues as they relate to spacecraft and simulator systems, and to work with International and Commercial Partners and senior Flight Operations and Program personnel to resolve those issues.
International and domestic travel
Must be able to apply for and successfully receive and maintain security clearance per eligibility requirements.
Current or previous Flight Controller certification and instructor certification
Familiarity with crew and flight controller training
Experience with simulation software development and verification
International and domestic travel will be required.
