Surveyor

       

Provide surveying/field engineering support of all USAP surveying/field engineering activities in support of construction, maintenance projects, science projects and all airfields in Antarctica. Deploys to Antarctica during the Austral summer.

Position

Responsibilities:

Provide surveying/field engineering support for the final design, orientation, layout, flagging, and final site drawings for Phoenix Airfield and Williams Field Skiway.
Provide surveying/field engineering support for Air Traffic Control Contractor on obtaining information for Ground Control Approach Surveys (GCA) and FAA Certification data for all USAP airfields.
Providing surveying/field engineering support for construction staking/earthwork projects and topographic projects (including final as-builts) for McMurdo Station and all facilities on the McMurdo Ice Shelf.
Provide surveying/field engineering support for science construction/support for science groups and field camps.
Provide surveying/field engineering support for Fleet Operations, South Pole Traverse Operations, South Pole Station, and Project Engineers- providing data for surveying/field engineering activities.
Keep the Survey Supervisor informed of the status of surveying/field engineering activities.
Interacts with National Science Foundation, military, and other agency officials in a professional and tactful manner.
Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
Performs other duties as required.

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

Three years of documented experience (Party Chief or equivalent) in land surveying / field engineering experience related to the construction and maintenance of facilities and systems.

Expected Skills and Competencies:

Proficiency in the use of total station data collection, survey-grade GPS equipment (RTK and Static) , and data collectors/data collection software
AutoCAD C3D 2017 and or Carlson Survey 2017 software
Experience with survey-grade GNSS systems.
Confident troubleshooter in field and office.
Strong computer background with skill in Microsoft Office programs.
Physically comfortable with and capable of extended periods of shoveling, operating handheld drills, and working outside in sub-zero temperatures.
Be able to complete a project from “Field to Finish”. ?

Preferred:

AS degree in surveying, Surveying Technical School Certificate, or equivalent preferred.
Trimble Business Center software preferred.
Experience with Trimble R8 & R10 GNSS survey system preferred.
Experience with Trimble Access and TSC3 data collectors preferred.
Knowledge of sea ice dynamics / properties and experience with USAP airfield requirements helpful.
Global Mapper software preferred.

Physical and/or Other

Requirements:

Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF

Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.

Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores) , “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station) , recycling efforts & safety objectives.
Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
