NSA’s Computer Scientists face technical challenges well beyond the wildest imaginations of most people. NSA’s mission requires persistent engagement to anticipate and understand complex threats in real-time, on a global scale. From Counter-Terrorism to Combat Support to Cybersecurity, NSA’s Computer Science community creates novel, cutting-edge solutions that advance science and underpin every aspect of our foreign intelligence and cybersecurity mission.
The explosion of internet communications has created a need for the Cybersecurity mission as well. The NSA Cybersecurity mission is to prevent and eradicate threats to National Security Systems and critical infrastructure, with a focus on the Defense Industrial Base. This diverse team of problem solvers collaborate across industry and government to expose foreign cyber espionage, patch critical vulnerabilities, modernize encryption, and issue unique, timely and actionable cybersecurity guidance.
With the ever-accelerating technological advances and growing system complexity, NSA also needs Engineers to integrate systems, reduce the cost to operate and maintain systems & to design, develop, construct and test electronic hardware and software processing components. These components are typically subsystems of communication, collection, processing or analysis systems.
In addition to the above, we also invite exceptional students to put their skills to the test solving problems in mathematics, cryptology, communications technology, statistics, and data science in support of the national security mission. This program offers students the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in the stimulating professional environment of one of the most advanced intelligence agencies in the world. These problems involve applications of abstract algebra, geometry, number theory, analysis, probability, statistics, combinatorics, graph theory and algorithms. State of the art computing resources are available, as well as computational software packages, such as Python, R, Sage, Magma, MATLAB and MAPLE, in addition to a variety of statistics packages.

Job Summary
Join students from across the country and lend your knowledge to national security in one of NSA’s over 30 summer internship programs. These 12 week paid programs run from mid-May to mid-August and are open to undergraduate freshman up to Ph.D. students depending on internship requirements. These internships are open to a wide variety of majors and give students the opportunity to work directly with mission-critical problems and experience the excitement of working directly in NSA spaces.
Qualifications
To be accepted into the NSA Summer Internship – STEM, candidates must:
– Be a U.S. citizen;
– Be eligible to be granted a TS/SCI/TK security clearance after successfully completing a background investigation that includes passing a Full-Scope Polygraph and a Psychological Evaluation;
– Preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for all college work completed;
– Be a currently enrolled college student (undergraduate, graduate or doctorate program) at time of application;
– Be available and in the U.S. for operational and technical interviews and other applicable processing, both in-person and via telephone/internet, between the months of November 2023 and March 2024;
– Be pursuing a major in:
– Computer Science or related field, such as:
– Computer Engineering
– Mathematics
– Data Science
– Physics
– Information Systems
– Cybersecurity
– Artificial Intelligence
– Engineering or closely related field, such as:
– Industrial Engineer
– Systems Engineer
– Computer Network Engineer
– Computer Engineer

– Mathematics or closely related field, such as:

***Please Note: You may be required to complete an Unproctored Internet Testing (UIT) requirement measuring cognitive ability, motivation, and English proficiency.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
– Students are paid a competitive salary commensurate with their education level.
– Receive annual leave, sick leave and paid federal holidays.
– Participation in agency-wide extracurricular programs.
– Students who attend school in excess of 75 miles from their duty location are eligible for a round trip airfare ticket to and from school or mileage reimbursement up to the cost of a government-issued airline ticket. Travel reimbursement will not be provided to our location in Hawaii.
– Daily transportation to and from work is NOT provided. Students participating in the program are highly encouraged to bring a vehicle. Carpooling with other students MAY be available, but is NOT guaranteed.
– Subsidized housing accommodations are available for Summer Interns stationed at Fort Meade, MD upon request if school is located in excess of 75 miles from Fort Meade, MD.
